Every May, Brighton transforms into the UK's music discovery capital. The Great Escape showcases over 500 emerging artists across 35+ venues, drawing music fans, industry professionals, and tastemakers from around the world.
What is The Great Escape?
The Great Escape (TGE) is Europe's leading festival for new music. Unlike traditional festivals held in fields, TGE takes over Brighton's existing music venues for three days of wall-to-wall live music. Think SXSW, but by the sea.
The festival runs across two components:
- The Festival (public) - Thursday to Saturday, showcasing new artists
- The Convention (industry) - Wednesday to Friday, for music professionals
Festival format
Multiple venues, one wristband
Your wristband grants access to 35+ venues across Brighton. Sets typically run 30-45 minutes, allowing you to see 10-15 acts per day if you plan well. Venues range from intimate 100-capacity rooms to 1,500-capacity halls.
Venue clusters
Venues are grouped into walkable clusters:
- Beach cluster - Concorde 2, Patterns, Volks, Brighton Centre
- North Laine cluster - Komedia, Patterns, The Verdict, Proud Cabaret
- Queens Road cluster - Hope & Ruin, The Rossi Bar, Coalition
- Station cluster - Green Door Store, Latest Music Bar
Planning your festival
Before you go
- Download the app - The official TGE app includes schedules, maps, and personalised recommendations
- Research artists - Listen to Spotify playlists curated by genre
- Plan loosely - Over-planning kills spontaneity. Mark 3-5 must-sees per day, leave gaps for discoveries
- Check venue capacities - Popular acts fill up fast at smaller venues
- Book accommodation early - Brighton hotels sell out months in advance
What to bring
- Wristband (wear it from day one)
- Comfortable shoes (you'll walk 15,000+ steps daily)
- Portable phone charger
- Light jacket (May weather is unpredictable)
- Reusable water bottle
- Cash (some smaller venues are card-only, but have backup)
Festival survival guide
Pacing yourself
TGE is a marathon, not a sprint. Three days of non-stop gigs is exhausting. Tips:
- Start later on day one (save energy for the weekend)
- Take breaks between 6-8pm for dinner
- Skip the queue if a venue looks rammed (there's always another great act nearby)
- Don't try to see everything (FOMO is real, but burnout is worse)
Venue etiquette
- Arrive 15 minutes early for priority acts (venues fill to capacity)
- Buy drinks at each venue (support the venues that host the festival)
- Don't venue-hop mid-set (it's disrespectful to the artist)
- Keep conversations quiet during performances
- Be patient with venue staff (they're working flat-out all weekend)
Discovery strategies
Genre hopping
TGE's strength is diversity. Don't stick to one genre. Some of the best discoveries come from stepping outside your comfort zone.
Follow the buzz
Pay attention to queues and social media. If everyone's talking about an artist, catch their next set. The festival grapevine moves fast.
International acts
TGE showcases artists from 40+ countries. This might be your only chance to see them in the UK. Check out the international showcases.
Local talent
Brighton's local scene is represented strongly. Support homegrown artists—they know how to work a hometown crowd.
Beyond the music
Alternative Escape
This free companion festival runs alongside TGE, featuring free gigs, street performances, and pop-up events across Brighton. No wristband needed.
Record shopping
Hit Brighton's record shops between gigs:
- Resident Records (Kensington Gardens)
- Punch Records (Sydney Street)
- Wax Factor (Sydney Street)
Food and drink
Don't survive on venue chips alone. Brighton has excellent food:
- North Laine - Independent cafés and restaurants
- Preston Street - Pre-beach-venue dining
- Kemptown - Late-night eats after midnight shows
Industry insight
If you're in the music industry, TGE Convention offers:
- Keynote talks from industry leaders
- Networking events
- First Listen showcase rooms
- Delegate-only gigs
Convention passes grant access to festival shows plus industry-only events.
Past breakthrough artists
TGE has a track record of showcasing future stars. Previous performers who went on to huge success include:
- Florence + The Machine (2008)
- The xx (2009)
- Alt-J (2012)
- Arlo Parks (2019)
- Wet Leg (2021)
- Yard Act (2022)

Getting to Brighton
- Train - 1 hour from London, services run late into the night
- Coach - National Express runs frequent services
- Car - Not recommended (parking is expensive and scarce)
Accommodation tips
- Book as early as possible (hotels fill up by February)
- Stay central (North Laine, City Centre, Kemptown)
- Consider Airbnb or hostels if hotels are sold out
- Factor in late-night walk/taxi back to accommodation
After the festival
Keep track of artists you discovered:
- Follow them on Spotify immediately (create a TGE 2026 playlist)
- Join their mailing lists for tour announcements
- Buy their merch (artists get a bigger cut than streaming)
- Share your discoveries on social media
Final tips
- Embrace the chaos - rigid schedules rarely survive first contact
- Talk to strangers - everyone's there to discover music
- Stay hydrated - Brighton in May can be surprisingly warm
- Support new artists - stream, share, and show up to future gigs
- Take notes - by Sunday you'll forget half of what you saw
The Great Escape is where you'll discover your favourite band of 2027. Come with an open mind, comfortable shoes, and a fully charged phone. See you in Brighton. 🎉
